5 Signs Your Heat Pump Has a Refrigerant Leak

If your heat pump is giving you trouble in Ormond Beach, FL, it may be time to have a service technician come out and inspect it. There are several things that could signal your home’s heat pump is leaking refrigerant, but sometimes people mistake them for other issues.

Ice in the Heat Pump

One telltale sign of a refrigerant leak is ice accumulation on the evaporator coil. The lack of heat generation causes the moisture to freeze, so be sure to check for this. Clearing the ice off will often result in it refreezing due to insufficient heat.

Higher Costs

A lack of refrigerant can cause your heat pump to work harder, which will raise your electrical bills. This is partly due to increased stress on components such as the compressor.

Odd Sounds

Low refrigerant may result in a number of unusual sounds coming from your heat pump. If you hear things like hissing or gurgling, this is a sign that something is wrong with the refrigerant.

Increased Humidity

Heat pumps normally remove high humidity levels from your home quickly. If you notice there’s more indoor humidity recently, this could be due to the refrigerant leaking.

Short Cycling

Heat pumps use a closed-loop refrigerant system, where the air temperature changes in cycles. A refrigerant leak will disrupt this system, creating a short cycle where the air isn’t warmed properly. This can increase the amount of time it takes to heat your home.

With any kind of HVAC malfunction, it helps to have a professional visit so they can thoroughly inspect your heat pump and identify the main causes of the problem.
